Sherman "Mitch" Mitchell, a pastor and civil rights leader who helped more than 100 prisoners serving life sentences get out of prison, died in a single vehicle accident on Foothill Road in Lucerne Valley on Nov. 20. Mitchell, 71, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, was believed to be driving to Mount Zion Baptist Church where he had served as pastor for many years. The Victorville Division of the California Highway Patrol received a 911 call at 8:39 a.m. He was pronounced dead soon after first responders arrived to the scene.
