Officials: In-custody High Desert Detention Center death of Barstow man remains under investigation

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials said they've launched an in-custody death investigation after Scott Purdy, of Barstow, was found "not breathing" in his bunk at the High Desert Detention Center at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday. Further details weren't provided, but officials said Sheriff's investigators "found no evidence of injury to Purdy's body, and it was determined he suffered from multiple medical conditions." Booking and court records show Purdy has been in custody since Aug. 19 after his arrest that day by the Barstow Sheriff's Station on suspicion of vehicle theft and attempted auto theft.
